“Most people want to quit tobacco but just don’t know how. Nancy teaches them how.”

Objective:
Provide tobacco knowledge and proven quit strategies for both cigarette and spit tobacco users. This objective is accomplished by helping each client create in himself/herself a strong desire to be in-charge of his or her own health and wellness by stopping the use of all tobacco products.

Structure:
For greater participation and success, this program is structured for group sessions. The tobacco cessation program is 8 hours which is taught in four, two hour sessions.

The key aspects covered in these sessions include but are not limited to:

·     Knowledge of why they use tobacco including the habitual component of their use.

·     Dangers of tobacco and immediate and long-term positive benefits when you quit.

·     Determination of personal expectations and motivations to quit.

·     Demonstration of  tobacco addiction concentrating on:

o    Physiological changes that occur with nicotine including brain biochemistry reactions.

o    Withdrawal symptoms.

o    Techniques to minimize the discomfort of stopping tobacco and nicotine.

·     In-depth knowledge on a variety (and their merits) of cessation aids (nicotine patches, gum,  lozenge, nasal spray, inhaler, herbs, acupuncture, prescription medications, i.e. Chantix, Zyban) that are available to help make quitting as comfortable as possible. This includes the latest recommendations from The Department of Health and Human Services and Mayo’s Clinic.

·     Stress management skills as clients become ex-smokers and ex-chewers.

·     Setting achievable goals for change, proper nutrition, and exercise.
